The informed perspective

Envisional’s fraud and security services depend on our ability to provide fast, accurate and complete information to

a wide range of national and international institutions in the banking and financial services areas.

For most of these organisations, the highest priority is to receive instant, detailed alerts whenever a serious new threat emerges. If a large-scale phishing assault is launched or a new trojan or keylogger targets a particular bank’s account holders, our ability to respond in real time is vital.

Other services we provide revolve around regular weekly or monthly reports on phishing and other nefarious activities, such as email fraud attempts and the registration of suspicious domain names.

We watch the Internet relay chat channels and message boards for references to the sale of credit card details – often for just $5 to $8 a head – and discussions of hacking methods. And all the time we observe the trends, spotting new techniques as they emerge and keeping our customers aware of what to expect next.

Envisional, of course, has its own unique technology to help it keep tabs on what is going on, giving it a huge advantage over anyone else in this field. But the perspectives gained by monitoring this constant flow of first-hand information gain added value when combined with the knowledge and experience of our specialised analysts.

Tracking a moving target

Predictions that the volume of phishing attempts would taper off as Internet users became more knowing have proved wrong. We have recently seen one bank hit by 350 separate attacks in a single day.

While some websites have begun offering free “beginners’ phishing kits” to tempt the amateur, the serious phishers are becoming more ingenious. The smartest phishing emails now use embedded images, instead of text, in order to bypass conventional spam filters (though Envisional’s technology is not fooled by this).

The latest innovation is the personalisation of phishing email with personal details stolen from other sources. How many people would question the authenticity of an email that looked just like one from the bank and included the correct name and address details?
